Chris Mullins, Intelligence & Data Analyst at the British Horseracing Authority, shared insight into his apprenticeship journey undertaking the Level 4 Intelligence Analyst Apprenticeship Standard, as well as his experience with Intelligencia Training.
What were your reasons for initially wanting to enrol onto the Level 4 Intelligence Analyst Standard?
“I moved from a role where I completed lots of analytical and investigative work, to a role where I would be a formal Intelligence Analyst. I had not completed any formal training on how best to analyse data and my skillset was gained through previous experience. I had previously completed a Level 5 Management Apprenticeship, so I understood the apprenticeship format and remembered how rewarding the programme was.
With permission and support from the British Horse Racing Authority, I began looking for suitable training. This is when I found Inteligencia Training. Andrew explained the Level 4 Intelligence Analyst apprenticeship to me and it sounded perfect – I would become a better analyst, whilst working towards a formally recognised qualification.”
How are you find undertaking the Level 4 qualification alongside your current role?
“I have begun consciously applying the techniques and knowledge that I have learnt from the modules into my day-to-day work. I find myself being much more methodical and using critical thinking, whilst becoming more efficient with my work.
Work-life balance wise, it hasn’t taken a toll at all. Since all apprenticeship work is required to be completed in work hours, I have been given the support of the BHA to flexibly manage my workload in order to attend modules and complete assignments.”
What parts of the Level 4 are providing the most value and benefit to your role at British Horse Racing?
“Without doubt it is the theory learnt in modules as to what makes a real solid investigation from start to finish. Previously I knew my strengths and weakness as an analyst – the theory and knowledge has helped me not only build on my strengths and improve my weakness, but has spotted skill and knowledge gaps I didn’t know I had. Ultimately, the BHA are getting a more effective analyst who is producing better products, more efficiently.”
Would you recommend this Level 4 to others, and why?
“Absolutely! The modules are fun, interactive and practical, and the assignments are engaging and relevant. You can see yourself becoming a better analyst module by module and this is reflected in your work. You have the support not just from the tutors at Inteligencia, but the peers completing the course alongside you.”
