Factsheet: Apprenticeship Reforms from April 2026
March 5, 2026During National Apprenticeship Week 2026, Intelligencia Training’s Partner Relationships Manager, Andrew Hyslop, visited the Counter Fraud team at Tesco Insurance & Money Services to join a live apprenticeship session and speak with learners about their experiences on the Level 4 Counter Fraud Investigator standard.
The session provided a valuable opportunity to hear directly from apprentices about why they enrolled, how they are finding the programme, and why professional development in counter fraud is so important for both individuals and the wider business.
Tom Wilson, Head of Counter Fraud at Tesco Insurance & Money Services said:
“Fraud evolves quickly, and so must we. Developing and investing in our people through key partnerships such as the one we have with Intelligencia is one of the most effective ways to strengthen our fraud-fighting capability. When colleagues grow in confidence and skill, the organisation grows with them – enhancing our ability to safeguard both our customers and our business.’’
Below, the team share their reflections in their own words:
Q1 – Why were you keen to enrol onto the Level 4 Counter Fraud Investigator Standard?
Rachel:
“I wanted to challenge myself to gain a new qualification.”
Emma
“The course content looking really interesting and I felt that learning what was on offer would increase my knowledge in my role and improve my performance. I have very little time outside of work to learn so this was an ideal opportunity.”
Heather
“Due to my family life and working full time this is my only route to education. Without the option of a work-based apprenticeship I am unable to professionally develop.”
Carolyn
“I am keen to personally develop and obtain a qualification related to fraud in a job I have worked in for the past 5+ years.”
Marie
“To increase my knowledge as I was new into my role as an Intelligence Analyst and wanted to broaden my interviewing and evidence techniques. It’s to help gain confidence.”
Q2 – How are you finding everything to date?
Rachel
“I am enjoying learning days. It’s been a bit difficult reengaging with the learning process and writing essays again, but very worthwhile.”
Emma
“I am finding the content so interesting and thought provoking, and have found myself adapting already. The course is delivered at a good pace, and Simon really brings the content to life.”
Heather
“I am really enjoying the course so far. More than I thought I would. The pace of work and learning is great and really interesting content.”
Carolyn
“I’m finding it really interesting. Thinking about my role and what we do from a totally new perspective. I find the trainer really engaging and approachable.”
Marie
“Informative and engaging. Simon involves the group to keep it interesting and there is a lot of legislation I previously wasn’t aware of.”
Q3 – Why is undertaking this qualification important for your development?
Rachel
“To push myself to always be improving. To learn new skills which I can share with colleagues. To not get complacent because that is when you get bored.”
Emma
“The training is important to me as it is and will give me enhanced skills in my role. It is important for Tesco as it will increase the capability of its staff.”
Heather
“Without developing staff Tesco is more vulnerable to fraud. We are the first line of defence.”
Carolyn
“I think it’s really important to develop professional skills, to keep on top of any changes in the industry to keep ahead. Benefits to Tesco is I am happier as I am learning new skills, engaged and helps me become more efficient in my role.”
Marie
“We are constantly evolving and trying to prevent fraud, having effective investigations and analysts is critical to customer confidence, the business and us in our role.”
Strengthening Capability through Apprenticeships
The reflections from the Tesco Insurance & Money Services team highlight the dual impact of the Level 4 Counter Fraud Investigator apprenticeship: empowering individuals to grow in confidence and capability, while strengthening the organisation’s resilience against fraud.
From increasing professional confidence to enhancing investigative techniques and legislative understanding, the programme is helping to build a skilled, engaged and forward-thinking counter fraud workforce.
Andrew’s visit during NAW2026 reinforced the value of investing in people, recognising that apprenticeships are not only about qualifications, but about developing professionals who form the first line of defence in protecting customers and business integrity.
